About Us
Henry Smith (Battersea) Ltd is Battersea's oldest independent Funeral Directors having been started by Charles Smith in 1847. On his death in 1888 the business was inherited by his sons who traded as Smith Brothers until 1900, when the eldest Henry Charles became the sole proprietor.
He was the first funeral director in the British Isles to use a motor hearse, a 1904 Daimler.

On his death in 1934 the firm was run by his sons and after the Second World War the ownership passed to Henry Smith & Gerard Carter the fathers of today's Directors. The great grandsons of the founder, John Smith & Derek Carter are involved on a daily basis with the Company. John manages London's oldest coffin and casket factory in Wandsworth whilst Derek oversees the funeral directing companies.
In common with many family firms we have grown over the years by amalgamating with other local companies and today we have four funeral directing businesses in South London.
Stanley Clare of Streatham joined forces with us in the 1950's, likewise Evershed Bros of Wandsworth & Earlsfield in 1977 on the retirement of Mr E Evershed.
Today we have an experienced team of people dedicated to helping the bereaved and continuing the fine tradition started by Charles Smith in the mid 1800's, combining that with the continually changing requirements of the 21st Century.
